Hamilton County Criminal History Checks
No single Hamilton County database contains every part of a criminal history. Begin with the event and court level. Current custody goes to the Hamilton County Sheriff and jail. Class A and B misdemeanor filings go to the County Clerk, while felony files go to the District Clerk for the 220th Judicial District Court. Hamilton and Hico municipal courts keep their own fine-only matters. A statewide conviction or deferred-adjudication search belongs to Texas DPS.
Names alone are weak identifiers. Gather a full legal name, prior names, exact date of birth, incident date, and case or booking number when possible. Then use the shortest official path:
- Identify whether the need concerns custody, an arrest report, a filed court case, or a statewide record.
- Call the jail for current custody, use Tyler UCM for County Court cases, or contact the proper clerk.
- Compare the name, date of birth, court, charge, and event date before accepting a result.
- Read the disposition or judgment instead of treating an arrest charge or docket date as the outcome.
- Order a certified copy or use fingerprint-based self-review when identity or final status must be confirmed.

Hamilton County Criminal Records: Three Layers
One arrest can create three records with different meanings. The sheriff or arresting agency writes the incident and arrest report. The jail adds intake, fingerprints, charges, holds, bond, and release data. A clerk later opens a case only if a prosecutor files a charge. DPS may then receive the fingerprinted arrest cycle and later disposition. Timing and scope explain why the layers may not match on the same day.
| Record layer | Hamilton County custodian | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Sheriff, jail, or arresting agency | Allegations, intake, custody, bond, and release |
| Filed court case | County, District, municipal, or justice clerk | Filed charge, docket events, judgment, and sentence |
| Texas CCH | Texas DPS Crime Records | Reported arrest cycles, prosecutions, and dispositions |
A jail entry proves custody, not guilt. The court judgment controls the filed outcome, while a public DPS name result is limited to the statewide information Texas law makes public.
Official Background Checks in Texas
The Texas Department of Public Safety offers the Criminal History Conviction Name Search. Its public output covers reported Texas convictions and deferred adjudications. It is not national, fingerprint-confirmed, or guaranteed to contain every arrest. An account and prepaid credits are required. DPS currently describes credits as $1 each, with a credit used to preview a candidate and more credit needed to open a record. Card purchases add a 2.25% per-credit charge and a $0.25 transaction charge. The separate offline name check is listed at $10.
For review of your own Texas record, FAST fingerprints through IdentoGO give DPS an identity-confirmed match. DPS lists a $15 subject review plus a $10 FAST fingerprint fee. No permanent Hamilton County enrollment site was verified, so use the live appointment scheduler for current mobile or nearby service.
| Official route | Published amount | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| DPS portal credit | $1 per credit, plus stated card charges | Public Texas conviction and deferred search |
| DPS offline name check | $10 | Name-based request outside the portal |
| DPS subject review | $15 | Review of your own fingerprint-linked record |
| FAST fingerprint service | $10 | Fingerprint capture for the subject review |
The DPS criminal-history records overview distinguishes public searches from record review and legal relief.
That distinction matters because the public product and a fingerprint-linked copy answer different questions.
Hamilton County Record Names or Fingerprints
The DPS name search works best when the researcher can compare more than a last name. The public screen asks for first and last name, with middle name, date of birth, sex, and race available as useful filters. Preview the candidate before opening the record. Similar names can return the wrong person, while spelling changes and missing submissions can hide the right one.
The FAST and IdentoGO appointment system handles fingerprint enrollment for a subject review or an authorized service-code request.
Use the current scheduler instead of relying on an unverified local storefront. Appointments can also be arranged by calling 1-888-467-2080, and an agency-directed check requires its service code.
DPS estimates about ten business days after receipt for the subject-review process. A wrong court outcome should first be corrected with the clerk that entered it.
Kinds of Criminal Records
Hamilton County criminal records follow the work that created them. An officer’s incident report can exist without an arrest. A booking sheet begins when the jail accepts a person. A complaint, information, or indictment is a formal charge filed with a court. The docket then records hearings, orders, a disposition, and any sentence. Warrants, supervision files, and registry entries serve separate functions.
- Incident and arrest reports: the investigating agency records the event, alleged offense, and legal basis for an arrest.
- Booking records: the jail records intake, fingerprints, holds, bond, custody, and release.
- Court files: the proper clerk preserves the filed charge, pleadings, hearings, judgment, and sentence.
- Warrants: the issuing court and sheriff confirm active status and the approved way to resolve one.
- Supervision and registry records: CSCD, TDCJ, parole authorities, and DPS maintain distinct public and restricted fields.
The record type decides where to ask. Hamilton County incident and police reports stay with the agency that investigated, including Hico Police or DPS when either made the stop. A court judgment is the public starting point for Hamilton County community supervision, while TDCJ supplies state-prison and parole status channels. Chapter 62 registration is separate from an ordinary conviction search, and the Hamilton County sex offender lookup follows that public-safety system. A broad request for every file about a name is harder to locate and may require more detail.
The DPS Crime Records questions page explains how statewide criminal-history products differ by scope and identity method.
That guidance helps separate a public name result from the fuller fingerprint-linked record available to the subject.
Hamilton County Court Record Portal
The County Clerk links Hamilton County users to the Tyler UCM public portal for County Court criminal cases. Select Hamilton County before trusting a result and choose the criminal category when that filter appears. Smart Search can accept a name or case number. Filing dates help narrow a common name. The portal is shared by participating counties, so labels and available controls can change.
| Portal field | Use | Hamilton County caution |
|---|---|---|
| County or location | Select the jurisdiction | Choose Hamilton County first |
| Search type | Smart Search, party, or case number | Options vary by deployment |
| Search | Enter name or case number | Follow the live format help |
| Case category | Narrow to criminal matters | Use when offered |
| Date filed | Reduce broad results | Use a range for uncertain dates |
Do not assume this County Clerk link covers every district felony. Felonies remain with the District Clerk in Suite 215. Older or unindexed matters also require clerk contact. Texas re:SearchTX does not fill that gap because its statewide public collection excludes criminal cases.
Hamilton County Criminal Records: What They Contain
A Texas criminal-history record groups identity and event cycles. Identifiers can include legal and alias names, birth date, sex, race, a Texas SID, an FBI number, and a tracking control number. The arrest segment identifies the agency, date, charge, code, and statute. Prosecutor and court segments can add the filed charge, cause number, action, disposition, sentence, fine, confinement, or community supervision.
| Name & Identifiers | Legal and alias names, date of birth, demographic details, SID, FBI number, and tracking number where present |
|---|---|
| Arrest / Booking Data | Agency, arrest date, booking identifiers, alleged charge, holds, bond, and custody events |
| Charges & Statutes | Arrest charge, filed charge, offense literal, code, and cited Texas law |
| Disposition | Dismissal, acquittal, conviction, deferred adjudication, or other recorded outcome and date |
| Sentence | Fine, confinement, community supervision, and other judgment terms |
| Custody / Supervision Status | Jail release, state custody, probation, or parole information when public and reported |
Public output may omit nonconviction or protected material. Never infer identity or guilt from one field. Match the event to the source case and read the final judgment.
Hamilton County Jail Record Fallback
Hamilton County publishes no official online inmate roster, booking report, warrant list, or sheriff app. For current custody, call the Sheriff and jail at 254-386-8120 or 254-386-8128. Nonemergency dispatch is 254-386-3300. Ask for booking number, current custody, charges or holds, bond, and expected court. The answer may be narrower than the complete arrest report.

Texas Public Access Laws
The Texas Public Information Act governs many agency records, but judicial case files follow court rules and clerk procedures. A written Hamilton County request to the sheriff needs no special legal phrase. It should name the existing report, date, place, event number, and record type. Within ten business days, an agency generally must release the material or seek an Attorney General ruling. That period is not a promise that a large request will be complete in ten days.
Key Texas laws:
Government Code Chapter 552 grants access, permits charges, sets ruling procedures, and includes law-enforcement exceptions.
Government Code Chapter 411 controls criminal-history dissemination and orders of nondisclosure.
Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A sets Texas expunction rules.
Family Code Chapter 58 protects and provides sealing rules for juvenile records.
Active-investigation information, juvenile records, private victim details, medical facts, driver-license data, and some 911 caller data can be withheld or redacted. The precise exception depends on the record and its status.
Hamilton County Record Request Costs
The District Clerk separates judicial record requests from TPIA requests. Its 2025 instruction sheet calls for a written request and payment in advance. The listed charges are $5 for each name or document search, $1 per page, $5 for certification, plus postage. Requests can go by email or mail. Mailed requests need a self-addressed stamped envelope and check or money order. The form asks readers to allow two business days after the office calculates the count and payment.
The Sheriff does not publish a separate local fee schedule, records email, clearance-letter product, or promised turnaround. Call before sending funds. For law-enforcement material, identify whether the needed item is an incident report, arrest report, booking sheet, CAD log, 911 audio, body-camera recording, crash report, or warrant confirmation.
The Texas Attorney General’s TPIA procedures explain the ruling framework used when an agency seeks to withhold information.
That process applies to government-held public information, while the Hamilton clerks use their court-record channels for judicial files.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
Texas expunction under Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A can apply to defined events, including certain acquittals, pardons, actual-innocence findings, dismissals after all legal conditions and wait periods, and specified diversion results. A Hamilton County dismissal does not erase an arrest by itself. The petition must identify the arrest, charges, cause numbers, petitioner, and each agency that holds covered records.
An order of nondisclosure under Government Code Chapter 411 is different. It limits public disclosure but permits access by criminal-justice agencies and other recipients named by law. It does not destroy the file. Juvenile sealing follows Family Code Chapter 58. The Hamilton County District Clerk lists DPS, the Office of Court Administration, the Justice of the Peace, TDCJ-CJAD, the District Attorney, CSCD, County Attorney, and County Court among notice recipients. That list shows why one order may need to reach many custodians.
Keep certified copies of a Hamilton County relief order. Then verify the clerk, arresting agency, jail, DPS, and public portal separately. Updates do not always reach every system at once.
Hamilton County Criminal Reporting Gaps
A missing Hamilton County disposition does not prove that a case is still open. DPS relies on courts, prosecutors, jails, and supervision offices to send later events into the Computerized Criminal History system. Delays, incomplete submissions, a changed charge, spelling differences, and a case that was never filed can all create an apparent conflict.
The DPS criminal-history reporting program describes the agency flow and its data-integrity work.
The image places the statewide result in context: local agencies create and report the events that DPS later assembles.
- Disposition
- The recorded final outcome of a filed charge, such as dismissal, acquittal, deferred adjudication, or conviction.
- Deferred adjudication
- A Texas outcome that postpones a finding of guilt while the person completes court-ordered conditions.
- SID
- The Texas state identification number used to connect fingerprint-linked criminal-history events.
- Cause number
- The court’s identifier for a filed case, useful when requesting the judgment or certified disposition.
Hamilton County Courthouse Record Route
The 1931 Hamilton County Courthouse is both an active records center and a Classical Revival landmark. It replaced an 1887 courthouse, so some records predate the current building even though successor clerk offices still hold them. The practical split is by charge level, not by the age of the structure.
Suite 107 is the County Clerk route for Class A and B misdemeanors and Class C appeals. Suite 215 is the District Clerk route for felonies in the 220th Judicial District Court. Fine-only matters remain with the municipal or justice court that handled them. Ask which level applies before visiting. Published hours are not consistent across county offices, so call before a long drive.
The Texas DPS Criminal History Conviction Search overview also shows why clerk files and the state’s public name product must be checked as separate layers.
A clerk’s certified judgment or relief order supplies the source document when a DPS entry needs review or correction.
City-by-City Criminal Records in Hamilton County
Local geography changes the first records office. Hamilton has no municipal police department, so county deputies handle city law-enforcement incidents while Hamilton Municipal Court keeps fine-only city cases. Hico has its own police department and municipal court. Evant crosses the Hamilton and Coryell county line, so the exact event location decides the sheriff, jail, clerk, and prosecutor. Each city record route must keep those custodians distinct.

The Hamilton County arrest search separates local booking data from arresting-agency reports, while each city route identifies the first local office.
Evant Criminal Records Cross Counties
“Evant, Texas” is not enough to route a criminal record. The incorporated town extends into Hamilton and Coryell Counties. First confirm the street or site of the incident, the responding agency, the court printed on a citation, and the jail that accepted any booking. For the Hamilton County side, use the Hamilton sheriff and the proper Hamilton clerk. For the other side, use Coryell County offices.
A statewide DPS name result cannot identify which local office holds the officer narrative. City alerts are also not a court search. Keep the event number and ask the responding agency for its report, then use the county of filing for the court outcome.
Note: A city name can locate a place, but only the incident location and issuing agency reliably locate an Evant criminal record.
